Global Cyber Study

About this survey

You are invited to take part in an online research survey. Participation is voluntary. Please read the information below before deciding whether to take part.

Purpose of the research

This is a research project that studies emerging patterns in digital activity, online communities, technical practices, and cyber-related decision-making across different countries and contexts.

Your responses will help the research team better understand online activity, motivations, risk perceptions, technical practices, group dynamics, and views about digital security from a global perspective.

What you will be asked to do

You will be asked to complete an online questionnaire. The survey should take approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

You may skip any question you do not want to answer.

Please do not include names, usernames, contact details, handles, IP addresses, wallet addresses, links to personal profiles, or other identifying information.

Voluntary participation and withdrawal

Taking part is voluntary.

You may stop at any time by closing your browser. If you close your browser before submitting the survey, your response may be incomplete and may not be used.

Because the survey does not collect identifying information, the research team may not be able to identify or remove your response after it has been submitted.

What data we collect

We do not ask you to provide your name, email address, username, handle, contact information, IP address, or other direct personal identifiers.

The survey collects your responses to questions about online activity, technical practices, motivations, risk perceptions, decision-making, group dynamics, target selection, and related topics.

The survey platform may generate limited technical metadata necessary to operate the survey, protect the integrity of responses, and prevent duplicate submissions. IP addresses are not stored by the research team.

What we ask you not to provide

Please do not provide information that identifies you or another person. Please also do not provide details about specific ongoing activity, specific victims, specific targets, operational credentials, private access information, or instructions that would enable harm.

Lawful basis for processing under the GDPR

To the extent the survey data are considered personal data, they are processed based on your consent under GDPR Article 6(1)(a).

The survey does not request special category data. If you choose to provide information that could be considered special category data, the research team may remove it where feasible.

How we use your data

Your responses will be used for research purposes, including analysis, reports, publications, presentations, and project dissemination.

Data sharing and processors

Your data will not be sold to third parties.

Survey data may be processed by approved service providers, such as the survey platform, under appropriate data protection arrangements.

Research outputs may be shared in aggregated form through reports, publications, presentations, and project dissemination.

Data retention

Survey responses will be retained indefinitely for research integrity, analysis, reporting, and future research use.

Data breach

If a data breach occurs, the research team will assess the incident, take appropriate steps to minimize harm, and notify the competent authority where required.

Your rights

To the extent your survey data are considered personal data, you may have rights under GDPR Articles 15 to 22, including access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection, and data portability where applicable.

Because this survey does not collect direct identifiers, the research team may not be able to identify your specific response after submission. This may limit our ability to fulfill requests that require identifying, correcting, or deleting a specific response.
